Bony Thorax (#1270)

Provide a realistic environment in which to simulate MIS or sternal access cardiothoracic procedures.

The spine and full rib cage of this trainer are suspended on an adjustable base allowing the torso to be rotated and locked in position. Ribs exhibit appropriately limited flexibility and intercostal spaces are anatomically accurate. Scapulae are fixed in position as if the patient’s arms were raised overhead. An economical skin wraps around the chest from posterior axillary to posterior axillary. This mimetic-tissue skin is reinforced to support incision and trocar placement and may be used multiple times before replacement is necessary.

The sternum is pre-incised and supports retractors for sternal access or can be held closed for simulation of minimally-invasive procedures. Our CABG Heart, encased in a replaceable pericardium, is tethered to the lungs and diaphragm for appropriate fixation. The trainer includes a pair of pliable, partially collapsed lungs as well as a non-patent trachea and esophagus which serve as anatomical landmarks.

CABG Hearts feature small channels in the epicardium each containing a Native Coronary Vessel segment for anastomosis practice. These suturable mimetic-tissue segments may be used a number of times and then replaced—allowing for years of training with a single CABG heart. Suturable Graft Vessels simulating a harvested internal mammary artery or saphenous vein, are sold separately. Suturing may be preserved and reviewed by mentoring faculty for progress assessment.
